Position Summary
The SEC reporting manager plays a critical role in our financial reporting team. The manager is responsible for leading the preparation and filing of high-quality reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This includes ensuring compliance with SEC regulations, coordinating with cross-functional teams, performing technical accounting research, and maintaining accurate financial disclosures. The manager collaborates closely with a variety of stakeholders across the company and with our external auditors.

Job Duties/Essential Functions

  • ADMINISTRATION: Ensures proper department coverage (writing schedule and break aids if needed). Understands department budget, and is able to research and explain budget variances.
  • MANAGING PERFORMANCE: Coaches and mentors employees to provide support and guidance. Has regular open and honest conversations with employees to discuss work performance and career development. Identifies learning opportunities to strengthen employee knowledge, skill, and ability.
  • COMMUNICATION: Regularly shares information with employees via meetings and one-on-one conversations. Successfully navigates difficult conversations with employees, members, and suppliers. Listens, expresses empathy, and adapts to get point across. Addresses issues immediately to ensure a timely resolution and to avoid escalating the situation. Consistently demonstrates business knowledge during interactions with senior management.
  • SELF-MANAGEMENT: Demonstrates sound judgment, taking a partner when necessary. Ability to maintain self-control in the face of hostility or provocation, or in intense, hectic situations.

  • COMPLIANCE AND SAFETY: Takes measures to ensure employee and member information is kept confidential and adheres to IS security policy.
  • Prepares and files reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Leads the preparation and filing of quarterly and annual reports (e.g. 10-Q, 10-K, 11-K, and 8-K) with the SEC. Ensures compliance with SEC regulations and guidelines in all financial disclosures, including XBRL review.
  • Researches and interprets accounting guidance. Stays updated on accounting standards and regulations. Conducts research on complex accounting issues and provides guidance on compliance.
  • Drafts Technical Accounting Memos. Develops detailed technical accounting memos to document accounting policies and decisions. Communicates and explains accounting treatments to internal stakeholders and external auditors.
  • Manages Equity Accounting and Stock-Based Compensation. Oversees the accounting for equity transactions, including stock-based compensation plans. Ensures accurate recording and reporting of stock-based compensation expense.
  • Coordinates with internal and external stakeholders. Collaborates with finance, legal, and external auditors to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Ensures Compliance and Accuracy. Maintains a strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting requirements, and SOX controls. Reviews financial statements and disclosures for accuracy and compliance with regulations.
  • Provides professional development of supervisory team and their staff.
  • Ensures all appropriate operational and accounting controls are designed and operating effectively.
  • Analyzes current procedures; recommends and implements enhancements.
  • Sets goals, including quality and productivity standards along with monitoring for compliance.
  • Ensures reconciliations are timely and accurate.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides leadership and actively participates as a member of the Accounting management team.
  • This is a full-time management/leadership position (45+ hours per week).

Experience, skills, education & licenses/certifications
Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, consolidations, and financial statement preparation and disclosure.
  • Technical Accounting expertise.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong emphasis on diplomacy and training ability.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deal with constant change in a positive manner.
  • Excellent organizational and follow up skills.
  • Extremely responsive, with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Willingness to rotate as needed within the organization.
  • HIPAA Training and Supervisors Orientation (within 30 days of hire); Leadership Development 101 (within one year); Costco Pay Policies (within 90 days of promotion).

Recommended:

  • 4+ years’ of SEC reporting or Financial reporting experience.
  • CPA or public accounting experience.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Google, ReconNet, Cadency, SAP, BI preferred, with an aptitude for learning new systems.
  • Experience with Financial Reporting software (e.g. OneStream, Workiva, etc.).
  • Proven leadership skills, including leading large projects and/or goal development and implementation.
  • Willingness to share knowledge, teach, and assist others as needed.
  • Proven ability to manage priorities and timelines.
